Kyoto, Heian-kyo as the ancient capital of Japan, was planned with the grid system of the roads according to the Chinese tradition. The city of Kyoto was changing for more than 1,000 years and the boundary of this city was not so obvious. From ancient time, there existed a lot of various diseased patients and also many mentally deranged persons were treated with some folk remedies around this city. Iwakura, located in the north of Kyoto, has been known as thevillage for the mental treatment and demonstrates that the boundary of the city, where the distance between the village and the city is not only maintained but also the relation to the city is more strengthened, is the suitable place for the psychiatric cure. In Kuse along the Saigoku-kaido similarly some insanes crowded into the Dainichi-do, that nowadays doesn't exist at all. Kuse, separated from Kyoto city by the Katsura river, can be a boundary of Kyoto as a healing place and its neighbouring Nagaoka-kyo city between Kyoto and Osaka is regarded the agreeable place for the various creative activities because that any social problems caused by these cities will motivate such artistic works in the relation with the cities.
