A layer structured niobium titanate CsTi2_NbO_7 has been prepared by a solid state reaction using Cs_2CO_3, anatase type TiO_2 and Nb_2O_5 at 800℃. Alkali and hydrogen ion exchange reactions have been studied in aqueous solutions. The single phases of lithium, sodium and hydrogen ion exchange products were obtained. They contained interlayer water and the host layers were retained on the reactions. The products were characterized by chemical analysis, TG-DTA and XRD. The lithium ion exchange product of Cs_<0.06>Li_<0.94>Ti_2NbO_7・2.7H_2O was heated at 150℃ in a vacuum. The resulting product of Cs_<0.06>Li_<0.94>Ti_2NbO_7・1.0H_2O was evaluated for use as the cathode in rechargeable lithium battery. The cathode exhibited discharge and charge capacities of 108 and 80 mAhg^<-1> at the first cycle in the voltage range of 1.5-4.2 V.
