George Eliot was a critic before she became a novelist. From 1846 to 1868 she wrote 72 critical articles (essays and reviews) for major periodicals, introducing the latest European current of literature, arts, philosophy, religion and history to mid-19th century Britain. No women writer had ever been so deeply engaged in the world of Victorian journalism as Eliot. Although in Britain she was appraised as the most intellectual critic of her time, her critical works have been given little attention in Japan, because they are too recondite. However, her reviews are interesting from the standpoint that they can provide insight into not only her novels but her mental development, especially as they reveal some of her most important views concerning art, creation, society and women's problems. The aim of this paper is to cast some light on her critical works and examine her inner world before she became a novelist. I will survey her career as a critic, analyzing major essays written during "her critical annus mirabilis" when she stayed in Germany and explain the circumstances which led her to create energetic critical writings.
