In pre-modern China, cities were usually walled. But the walls of these cities were not always covered with bricks called Zhuang-Wa (磚瓦). Enormous amounts of bricks are necessary to cover all the walls of a city. The walls were only made of mud if a governor of a city could not prepare enough bricks for all the walls, as we can seen in Da-Du(大都)in the Yuan(元) Dynasty. This paper will survey Nang-Jing(南京)city wall in the Ming(明) Dynasty. Enormous amounts of bricks were brought in from the brick kilns on the middle coast of Chang-jiang(長江) river. The government of the Ming Dynasty collected taxes in kind from the master of brick industry. In other words the brick industry was developed under the control of the government.
