The importance of tropical forest for rural people has not yet been evaluated properly. The objective of this research was to examine the changes in the pattern of heat energy consumption, use of timber in construction and associated changes in tropical forest. This study was conducted from 1997 to 1999 and the site consisted of six villages in northeastern Thailand. 99 households (14.2%) were selected at random. Data was collected from the questionnaires, personal interviews, direct observations and measurements. All the households planting trees on their private land were also interviewed. It was clear that fuelwood was the main source of heat energy and charcoal was its complement. Recently however, the use of gas and electricity has become popular. Although villagers continue to use wood as building material, they have adopted cement and concrete as substitutes for construction timber. These substitutes are bought at the city market and not always obtained by barter system or personal relations within the village. In order to deal with the shortage of wood in future, private reforestation has been seriously considered and villagers have started planting trees on their private land.
