After 5 years of sentence in Siberia, some 1000 Japanese prisoners were transferred to Fushun, China as war criminals in 1950. At that time, they all stubbornly refused to admit they committed war crimes and pleaded not guilty because they were under the control of the higher command and the rule of the Emperor system in Japan. During their 6 years of stay in Fushun, they themselves made major personal changes. In the agonizing process of Ninzai, they listened and understood the war victims' standpoints. Finally, they recognized their war crimes and confessed their crimes to the Chinese war victims. I have discussed the process how they recognized their war responsibility, the necessity of incorporating the victims' viewpoints in their frame of reference, and the difficulty of recognizing and reflecting on their past crimes.
