The environmental impact resulting from the energy consumption in the building sector is considerable. The energy consumed to heat and cool buildings in Cyprus is close to 30% of the country's total energy consumption. In this background, this study aims in investigating the thermal performance of residential buildings on the island of Cyprus in relation to the local climatic and bio-climatic parameters, as a way of reducing the potential damage due to the energy utilization and of using the building itself as an energetic system which, through the dialogue with the local climate and microclimate, can allow for establishment of reasonable energy needs. Moreover, adequate use of solar energy for daylighting, heating and cooling thus displacing the needs for commercial forms of energy, while simultaneously providing thermal comfort conditions to the inhabitants.
