Although the total vocabulary between Les Fleurs du Mal and Le Spleen de Paris is almost the same (around 27,000 words), 50 groups of animals can be found in the former poetical works in verse whereas one can count 28 in the latter prose poetry. In brief, Les Fleurs du Mal contains various groups of animals almost twice as many as Le Spleen de Paris. Why did Baudelaire enumerate so many kinds of animals in Les Fleurs du Mal? In this article, by means of classifying all kinds of animals and of analyzing some typical examples in both poetical works, several remarkable tendencies in Les Fleurs du Mal in which a lot of animals appear, especially some kinds of worm and beasts of prey that seem to symbolize the original sin, have been made clear. Baudelaire uses these kinds of animals in order to represent the depraved and sinful reality of humanity. On the other hand, in Le Spleen de Paris, there are no examples similar to those of Les Fleurs du Mal. This is one of the most interesting and important thematic differences between two major poetical works of Baudelaire. Thus, by illustrating with various usages of animals in Les Fleurs du Mal and Le Spleen de Paris, we are able to elucidate the significance in literary history of each poetry.
