Some major Japanese department stores have developed on the basis of management and operation knowledge transferred from European and American department stores in these hundred years. Especially, after World War II, they got over big challenge that they faced in those days and reached to the peek of this industry's market share in retail market. In this paper, three facts were appeared through the survey of their companies' histories and interviews of the plural number of their employees who belonged to the department stores in 1950's and 60's. First, in transferring the knowledge of European and American department stores, various methods were adopted, for example, visiting foreign stores, importing operation manuals, affiliating with foreign department stores' associations, cooperating with big firms, sending many trainees to them, invitation speakers to seminars in Japan, and opening branches in abroad. Secondly, most of these knowledge transfers were low-leveled commitment, which the typical example was visiting foreign stores. And European and American department stores' management styles were not directly imported, and didn't change Japanese one radically. Thirdly, it appeared in the difference between established firms originated in dress fabrics stores and newly-risen firm like Isetan and Seibu. In the former, Takashimaya and Daimaru were positive to import knowledge by making use of the advantages of global networks since before the War.
