The purpose of this paper is to show one evaluation of Willson's Readers, published by Harper & Brothers, in 1860s America. This study is based on the booklet of the Harper's School and Family Series of Standard Text-Books published in 1864. In the booklet, it was reported that the Reader had been adapted widely in 1860s America. For example, this was the case in three whole states including California, and in many cities including New York and Philadelphia, in more than 15 states. The author of the paper has concluded the following as regards the causes of this quick spread of adaptations of the Readers: beautiful illustrations were effectively related to the written texts; scientific reading materials were developed; instruction on reading and speaking was integrated; graded instruction based on the art of reading was used; and so on. They were intended by Marcius Willson to be Readers which functioned as object lessons in his own system. According to the booklet, it might be concluded that the progressive suggestions in Willson's Readers were approved and supported by educators in 1860s America.
