• Endo Shusaku's 1966 novel Silence was filmed in 1971 and adapted into an opera in 1993. The film and opera were generally faithful to Endo's novel while altering or compressing some of the details of the plot.Endo's two main questions are about how an individual copes with the state's demands to give up one's deepest beliefs and also about whether a foreign belief such as Christianity can take root in Japan with its unique society and culture.
