Wireless LANs (WLANs) with different standards such as IEEE 802.11a/b/g have been widely spread. In the existing access point (AP) selection scheme, because each station (STA) selects autonomously an AP based on the received signal strength only, many STAs may concentrate in a specific AP, thereby degrading the network performance. Although we proposed a decentralized AP selection scheme (MIT) to solve this problem, it focus on homogeneous WLANs (802.11b) only. Therefore, in this paper, we focus on heterogeneous WLANs (802.11b/g) and propose a new AP selection scheme considering the difference of communication characteristics such as its (1) throughput and (2) transmission coverage. Finally, we show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme through simulation experiments.
