In this paper I discuss notions of life and consciousness. I sketch the outline of a proof for hylozoism, which is the doctrine that each individual object is alive. The argument depends on notions taken from theoretical computer science concerning the complexity of naturally occurring computations. The argument is meant more to set the mind in motion than to be a final and definitive proof.
