The M.S. "H" maru, under charter by T. KAIUN, Tokyo, loaded 3,000M/T of Ammonium Sulphate in bags at Akita, Japan and left there for Hsikang, China on May 19, 1958. When the vessel was proceeding about 60 miles west of Tsushima, a fire broke out in engine room at about 21.10, May 23 and despite every effort of the crew, the fire soon gained in force and in a short while the engine room and the bridge were all aflame. Several vessels approached "H" maru in response to. the S.O.S signal sent, out by the latter and rescued the crew of the vessel in distress but during the life saving operations one of the life boats was capsized and 6 men were missing, including 2 of "H" maru's crew. "H" maru was eventually taken to Moji in tow of a salvage boat on May 27 and the cargo was later transhipped to T. maru to be forwarded to its destination. The latter vessel, leaving Moji on June 3, safely arrived at Hsikang on June 6 and the cargo was delivered to the consignees.
