For the equilibrium immiscible Ag-Ta system characterized by a positive heat of formation of +23kJ/mol, a proved realistic extended Finnis-Sinclair potential is applied to study the crystal-to-amorphous transition through molecular dynamics simulations and a glass-forming range (GFR) of the Ag-Ta system is determined to be from 10 to 80at. % of Ta, within which a disordered state is energetically favored than its crystalline counterpart of solid solution. In experiment, the uniform amorphous phases are indeed obtained, by ion beam mixing of far-from-equilibrium, in the Ag_<38>Ta_<62>, Ag_<30>Ta_<70> and Ag_<20>Ta_<80> Ag-Ta multilayered films, which fall within the GFR and thus confirm the relevance of the calculated GFR of the system.
