The woody biomass has been a matter of concern as carbon neutral energy. We performed the operational examination using the 30kW gasification power generation system (fixed bed down-draft reactor) which SATAKE introduced from Indian Institute of Science as a small-scale distributed biomass gasification power plant in Japan. This is a simple system composed of a gasification reactor, scrubber, cyclone, chiller, bagfilter, diesel engine and generator. Performance tests were conducted using a woody chip and waste bamboo raft for oyster cultivation. Following results were obtained. (1) The calorific value of biomass gas is about 5.4MJ/m3N. (2) From 84% to 91% of diesel fuel (light oil) is substituted by biomass energy. (3) Electricty generation efficiency is about 19%. This is almost equal to that of large scale municipal waste power generation. (4) Stable biomass gas and electricity are obtained in 1 hour after ignition. Shut-down procedure is completed in about 30 minutes. These performances showed that this is suitable for daily start stop plant for the local distributed power generation system. (5) Fine controls are unnecessary except for the start-up and shut-down operation. This gives minimum labor cost that is one of serious obstacles in small-scale plant. From now on, fuel flexibility and long-term performance test are scheduled.
