The design of internal flow path in a gas turbine inlet casing is important because it greatly affects performance, internal flow patterns, and vibration characteristics of blades (including vanes) in an axial-flow compressor of gas turbines. This paper presents the results of an experimental and numerical study carried out to improve non-uniform flow patterns upstream of Inlet Guide Vanes (IGV) and to reduce turbulence intensity of the flow in a gas turbine inlet casing with struts. Three models of inlet casing, CASE1, CASE2 and CASE3, were proposed and examined in experiments, in a 1/4 scale. Internal flow patterns were examined with the tuft method, and the flow velocity, flow angle and turbulence intensity upstream of IGV were measured using a three-hole cobra-head probe and an I-type hot wire probe. The internal flow field in a gas turbine inlet casing was characterized by these results, and the well-designed flow path profile of CASE3, based on the experimental results, was selected to standardize the design of turbine inlet casings. The numerical simulation was executed to make the detail flow patterns clear using "STAR-CD", a commercial CFD software package. Two different turbulence models were applied to the numerical flow simulation: the Standard k-ε model ; and the RNG k-ε model. However, it could not be determined whether the RNG k-ε model was superior to Standard k-ε model from the results of a comparison of the measured values and calculated ones.
