The effects of blade surface roughness on pressure loss in blade rows of an axial flow compressor were investigated by numerical analysis, using a commercial computational fluid dynamics code, assuming fouling on blades. Two-dimensional calculations were conducted for the first stage rotor and stator blade rows in which the fouling as well as the effect of fouling on the efficiency will be most notable. For the rotor blade, a conventional DCA blade shape, and for the stator blade, a conventional NACA65 blade shape were adopted. Transonic flow computations were conducted at the operating conditions near the design points ; the inlet Mach numbers were 0.87 for the rotor blade row and 0.77 for the stator blade row. The pressure loss coefficients resulting from flow computations were calculated for various roughness heights in the range of 0μm to 20μm. The pressure loss coefficients increased 43% for the stator blade row and 20% for the rotor blade row because of the increase of the roughness height from 0μm to 20μm.
