The flow characteristics in the axial inlet, radial outlet annular diffuser for gas turbines and turbochargers were measured. The experiments were carried out by varying the area ratio and the inlet swirl angle of the diffuser. The result of the experiment was that the flow separation occurred at the shroud wall of the diffuser exit when the area ratio was large. In case the swirl angle was large, the performance extremely drops because another flow separation occurred at hub wall. In addition, the point of flow separation was predicted by the boundary layer integral equation. The flow separation occurred at the shroud wall of the diffuser exit in the calculation as well as the experiment. Moreover, the flow characteristics in the diffuser which was set downstream of the rotating turbine blade was measured, and the result was compared with that of the experiment without rotor blade.
