The development of a low NO_x combustor is underway at AMG. To achieve low NO_x emissions, a LPP swirling flow combustor was selected. There are two objectives for this combustor. One is to get a uniform fuel/air mixture coupled with well-atomized fuel to produce low NO_x emissions. The other is to achieve combustion stability in this new concept combustor. It was shown by the author (1998) that a uniform circumferential distribution of the equivalence ratio allowed a combustion stability to be obtained. But EI NO_x was about 13g/kg fuel, and the target emission index wasn't satisfied. Therefore the combustor was improved by reducing the equivalence ratio in the combustion area, so that EI NO_x 10g/kg fuel was achieved. While the development of a variable control mechanism is underway in parallel. The purpose is to achieve the wide range operation and the prevention of the flashback and the autoignition by controlling the distribution of fuel and air. The performance of a high response fuel control valve was confirmed in the function test. Furthermore the development of the CMC liner is underway as well. The CMC liner is favorable for a low NO_x and a high TIT. The primitive durability of CMC liner was confirmed in the combustion test.
