The combustor using airblast atomizer with premixed/prevaporized tube is a combustion system capable of realiz-ing low NO_x emissions for gas turbines. Liquid fuel is burned after the processes of atomization and evaporation. The flow characteristics of the atomizing air affect the liquid fuel atomization and evaporation characteristics, which in turn do influence the combustion process (Jasuja. 1979). In this study, special attention has been paid to the effects of swirl angle, swirl direction and velocity of the atomizing air. The effects of these parameters on the Sauter Mean Diameter (SMD) and the combustion characteristics have been examined. In the case where the swirl of center air and shroud air are counter-rotating, the SMD becomes smaller with increasing air velocity or swirl number and the NO_x emission is increased. The fuel concentration at the exit of the pre-mixed/pre-vaporized tube is greatly different for co-rotating and counter-rotating swirls.
