When the increase of energy consumption has been a global tendency in recent years, it can be safely said that effective utilization of energy resources and control of environmental loads are the priority issues to address in the automobile industry today. In the Automotive 100kW Ceramic Gas Turbine project started in 1990, a national project of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry, we have demonstrated that a thermal efficiency of 40% and low emission characteristics can be achieved with even a small size gas turbine through the use of ceramics in its high temperature parts for higher inlet gas temperature. As an application area of a small gas turbine, the hybrid system and co-generation system with a directly coupled high speed generator has a good chance of realization. Currently, we have developed a 2-pole rare earth metal permanent-magnet type high speed generator which efficiency is higher than 90%. This report presents details of our development.
