Global environmental problems such as global warming, acid rain, and ozone depletion, combined with energy-saving issues, have become important problems. For the above reasons, combined cycle power plants, which use liquefied natural gas (LNG) as fuel, have maintained their major role because of their high efficiency and low emission of CO_2 gas. Hitachi, Ltd. has a great deal of experience in both construction and operation of combined cycle power plants for electric power companies and others. Based on this experience, we completed the construction of the first advanced combined cycle plant (ACC plant) in Japan with output of 350MW using a 1300℃ class gas turbine, Yanai Power Station No.2-1 series of Chugoku Electric Power Co., Inc., and began commercial operation in March 1994. This plant was able to achieve 47.2% (HHV condition) of thermal efficiency on the performance test, 7% higher in relative value in comparison with the No.1 series of this power station. It has been operating smoothly with no trouble since March and is expected to contribute to energy-saving needs and to prevention of environmental pollution.
