Solar Turbine's Taurus 70 gas turbine is a 7MW class industrial gas turbine developed in response to a growing market demand. The gas turbine is designed to produce 7.1MW (9500 horsepower) with a simple-cycle thermal efficiency of 34% at ISO conditions. The twoshaft machine incorporates Solar's latest product technology and design features for rugged, durable operation in industrial service with minimal life-cycle costs. It incorporates similar technology derived from the well proven Taurus 60 and Mars gas turbines. The Taurus 70 design features an uprated version of the Taurus 60 air compressor and a pollution prevention combustion system similar to the Mars. These features along with Solar's traditional product development strategy provide for a low-risk gas turbine design with the highest simple-cycle efficiency and lowest pollutant emissions is its power class. The new gas turbine is available at an introductory rating of 6.64MW (8900hp) at 33% thermal efficiency and can be packaged for industrial service in electrical power generation, gas compression, and pump drive applications. This paper describes the proven product technology, the basic engine configuration, and the development test program involved in the development of the new Taurus 70 gas turbine.
