We have developed the new bearing test rig which enabled us to evaluate performance of bearings under high speed and high temperature conditions using motor drive. Temperature rise, running torque and power loss of bearings are compared with hybrid ceramic bearing setting in HIP-Si3N4 ball and M50 steel bearing under the 2 million d・N value (φ20×100000r/min). Over 1.4 million d・N value, hybrid ceramic bearings show higher performance than M50 steel bearing. If the proper oil filling condition is chosen, hybrid ceramic bearings reduce bearing power loss to about 40% of M50 steel bearings. Two material of cages, polyimide and brass are compared. Polyimide shows lower level of temperature rise than brass. All ceramic bearings are tested under the 2 million d・N value. Inner ring is broken when tensile hoop stress of inner ring is beyond 260MPa due to the interference between ceramic inner ring and steel shaft under high temperature. Therfore, temperature of bearing should be safely controlled so that tensile hoop stress would not be beyond 260MPa in order to use all ceramic bearings.
