The MFT8 rated at 33,000ps has been developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) in support of the Thechno-Superliner (TSL) R & D program. The MFT8 combines the GG8 Gas Generator from Pratt & Whitney/Turbo Power & Marine with a new 3 stage, 5,000rpm, cantilevered rotor power turbine which was designed by MHI specifically for the TSL program and other high speed marine craft applications. This MFT8 is also be able to apply land use like utility power plant, water pump drive and compressor drive. The GG8 has much experience, which proved its high reliability especially about hot parts, with many types of power turbine for land use. The GG8 also has low NO_x performance with water injection or dry low NO_x. The power turbine was designed very simply and was already proven high reliability and high performance by actual TSL cruise and shop tests. This MFT8 is also very excellent for variable speed use like pump and compressor drive because it has no critical speed within the operating range 1,000〜5,000rpm. This paper shows the details of MFT8 design.
