The field of turbomachinery encompasses a large array of machinery for both the consumer and capital goods markets. The design process has undergone radical transformation over the past decade with substantial reduction in the time required to complete a new design including product development. Today, design tasks are conducted in parallel, that is, through the practice of concurrent engineering. The entire workplace has been radically changed as industries downsize, outsource work, retrain personnel, and adapt to new design tools. This study looks at the broad world of turbomachinery design and development and assesses some of the technological needs of the coming decade. Validation of design tools has been recognized as an important requirement. Future designs will prove challenging: enhanced efficiency and range, reduced cost, and failure proof operation.
