This paper describes the experimental studies of NO_x emission and combustion efficiency in a methane-fueled ram combustor. This ram combustor must meet the demands required by the turbo-ram combined engine which is now being developed in Japan as a national project. The object of the studies is to get the effective way to reduce NO_x at high temperature condition satisfying other requirements, especially combustion efficiency at low temperature. The two-stage flame holder concept was tested for this purpose. It was shown that this method can be one of the hopeful solutions to meet this demand. In order to raise the air temperature up to 1250K without vitiating, the electric heater have been made using the special heating system. By this it become possible to evaluate NO_x emissions experimentally at such high temperature condition. We have compared the structures of flame holder from viewpoint of the NO_x emission. The local concentration of NO_x and the local combustion efficiency were measured inside the ram combustor to understand the combustion process at very high temperature condition.
