The experimental data on the fundamental mechanism of NO_2 formation in gas turbine combustors are presented and discussed. Both a double concentric jet facility and a quartz flow reactor were used in the experiments. In the double concentric jet experiment, it was indicated that the NO_2 formation in the mixing region of a hot combustion gas jet with a cold air jet was clearly promoted by methane doped in the cold air jet and also by unburned species originally contained in the combustion gas jet under a fuel-rich condition. In the flow reactor experiment using a reacting flow of NO (20ppm)/air/hydrocarbon mixture, the rate of the NO_2 formation was examined with varying the type and the initial concentration of hydrocarbons at a reaction temperature of 800K. It was indicated that ethylene, propane and propylene could strongly but methane and ethane could weakly promote the NO_2 formation, and that the increase of the initial concentration of the hydrocarbons could accelerate the NO_2 formation. In conclusion, the promotion of the NO_2 formation by the presence of unburned species may be a potential mechanism for explaining the high proportion of NO_2 to NO_X in the exhaust of gas turbines especially under low-load operating conditions.
