By a modification of reshaping the tongue of the centrifugal fan casing, a substantial effect of noise reduction has been achieved keeping its aerodynamic performance. It was in consideration of the rotating noise due to the interference between the tongue and the delivery flow from the impeller vane. The flow distribution around the tongue were investigated in order to examine the effect of modified tongue by measuring the correlation between the distribution of velocity fluctuations of the wakes and radiated noise. The result was that the conventional shape tongue had high correlation with noise, on the other hand, the modified shape tongue had little. It was proved that the modification of the tongue shape had the effect of breaking the simultaneity of the fluctuations of flow in a direction of the vane width and diminishing the strength of the noise source.
