Radial distribution of total pressure and total temperature is remarkably changed in rear stages of multi-stage, axial-flow compressors due to radial mixing. Turbulent diffusion, which is an important mechanism of mixing, was investigated by hot-wire anemometer measurement. The tests were conducted to measure Reynolds stress distribution behind rotor blades for two types of compressors. The velocity and the Reynolds stress in the frame of rotor blades were obtained by using phase-lock measurement system. In addition a throughflow method for axial-flow compressors, which accounts for the effects of the radial mixing by incorporating turbulent diffusion terms, was used to calculate the radial distribution of total pressure and total temperature. By the hot-wire measurement it is found out that the pitchwise average of eddy viscosity is dependent on the loss coefficient. The throughflow results show that agreement with the measured data is good when using the eddy viscosity obtained by this measurement.
