A high pressure ratio centrifugal compressor was tested with a vaneless diffuser and various vaned diffusers. The vane inlet angle was changed from 71 to 80 degrees. Increase of the vane inlet angle moved surge line toward the smaller mass flow rate. Analyzing the static pressure characteristics of the impeller exit and diffuser exit determined which the impeller or diffuser was trigger of surge. (a) At off-design speeds: Although the diffuser usually determined surge, there was a minimum mass flow rate that diffuser could not control surge. (b) At design speed: There was three possible combinations of the impeller and diffuser pressure rise patterns. Two cases were diffuser controlled surge. One case was that the impeller was a trigger of surge near the design mass flow rate depend on the choice of the vane inlet angle.
