Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has been a leading company of gas turbine and combined cycle plants in Japan. Almost one half of the combined cycle plants in Japan were supplied by MHI. MHI is also leading the advancement of technology in this area. In 1984, the first commercial dry low-NO_x combustor was introduced by MHI in "Higashi-Niigata Thermal Power Plant". The record of highest thermal efficiency in Japan is being held by MHI for the last 10 years. The first 1350℃ class "F" series gas turbine, 501F, was tested at full load condition in Takasago Machinery Works of MHI in 1989. Since then, 29 units of "F" engines have been sold and 13 units are in commercial operation, and have been exhibiting high reliability. They demonstrated excellent performance and very low NO_x, thus getting good appraisal from customers. Based on the reliable experiences with "F" series gas turbine, MHI is also developing new gas turbines for the next generation namely the, "G" series and the "H" series. The "G" series is a 1500℃ class air cooled gas turbine, which is scheduled to start operation in 1997. The "H" series is a 1500℃ class steam cooled gas turbine, which is scheduled to start operation in 1998. Those new gas turbines incorporated advanced technologies, which were developed and verified through extensive component tests since 1989. A part of component development was conducted under the joint development program with "Tohoku Electric Power Company".
