IGTC-117 Three-Dimensional Flow Structure around a Blade Tip(Organized Session III TIP CLEARANCE FLOW)

The three-dimensional characteristics of tip clearance flow was studied in detail by experimental and numerical methods. The experiment was performed in a low speed wind tunnel using an isolated blade. The numerical study was carried out by a previously developed method which solved the thinlayer Navier-Stokes equations with LU-ADI scheme. Vortical flow structure around tip surface was clearly revealed by the results where a tip leakage vortex and a separation vortex on the tip surface interacted in the suction side of the blade. Some regions with large total pressure loss were distinguished around the blade tip. Lift retention on the tip for small tip clearances was studied, and the retention was found to be strongly affected by the leakage flow round the tip of pressure surface. The amount of the retained lift correlated well with the nondimensional clearance based on blade thickness.
