Pratt and Whitney Canada's ST6L, a derivative of the PT6 aero-engine, is a two shaft gas turbine engine. Four series of compact gas turbine packages have been developed and standardized using the ST6L-79 and ST6L-81 engines. Before finalizing the standard configuration of the packages, controllability tests, and load step-up/-down tests were completed using a generator to establish their characteristics and to prove their suitability for industrial applications. In the paper, the characteristics of speed fluctuation of the small size gas turbine engine due to a sudden load step-up or -down condition are mainly described. We have had experiences with the test package and with the emergency power generation package which is already in service. Further, the NO_x emission characteristics of the gas turbine engine without/with water injection and performance characteristics of cogeneration application are described.
