The Chugoku Electric Power Co. has been constructing Yanai Power Station at Yanai city in Yamaguchi prefecture. It consists of combined cycle units with a total output of 1400 megawatts (MW). The power station has two plants (700MW each), plant 1 and plant 2. Plant 1 consists of six combined cycle units, the first three of which completed trial operation and entered into commercial operation in November, 1990. The remaining three units are scheduled to start commercial operation in December, 1992. Compared with conventional thermal power plants, a combined cycle plant has higher plant efficiency and greater flexibility in operation. In designing the current plant, we made the following improvements to meet our design criteria: The plant operates efficiently due to improved start and stop (DSS) capability that increase the rate of load change. The plant was designed to meet environmental protection regulations. The gas turbines feature newly developed dry-type low-NO_x combustors that maintain a low NO_x content in the exhaust from the gas turbine to over the entire load range of normal operation. The plant consists of multiple units. To monitor and control them, we designed the system with an advanced man-machine interface with CRT displays and a 110-inch large screen display. The control system supports both smooth operation of the plant and automation of the related office work. This report mainly describes the results obtained during test operation of the No.1 Group of Plant 1.
