An experimental study was conducted to determine the effects of tip-clearances between a turbine rotor and a shroud casing on the efficiency of a small radial turbine employed for an automobile turbocharger. Generally, the turbine efficiency obtained from a turbocharger performance test includes mechanical losses. In order to extract pure turbine efficiency, the bearing loss was evaluated by measuring the heat flow rate of lubricanting oil. Two types of rotors with a different inlet diameter were employed for clearance tests. Clearance changes were scheduled in such a way as to isolate the effects of clearance changes at the rotor inlet from those at the rotor outlet. Consequently, the effects of clearances on the turbine efficiency was evaluated. It was indicated that the decrease of efficiency resulting from an increase of clearance at the rotor outlet is greater than that at the rotor inlet.
