An aerodynamic design method of centrifugal impellers by a quasi three-dimensional flow analysis is presented so as to improve the performance of compressors for CFC11 chillers. Because the sound velocity of CFC11 gas is much lower than that of the air, not only loading limit but also flow Mach number should be taken into account in estimating the analyzed flow for an impeller. The design criterion for the flow Mach number is proposed in this report. The performance test was carried out for the impeller designed by the present method. The efficiency, surge margin, and choke margin were improved as compared with the test results for the impeller designed by a one-dimensional method. The ratio of the maximum efficiency of the designed compressor to that of a standard performance compressor for CFC11 chiller was 1.04, and the ratio of the maximum efficiency of the designed impeller to that of the standard performance impeller was 1.06.
