Ceramic components applicable for a gas turbine engine have been developed, and a ceramic gasifier turbine wheel satisfied the rated operating condition of the engine in a test rig. The ceramic gasifier turbine wheel is a radial inflow type with the same inlet diameter as a metallic turbine wheel of the engine under development. High-temperature strength was evaluated by a hot gas test rig, and proved to withstand the inlet gas temparature of 1200C. The strength design procedure of a ceramic turbine wheel should be substantiated by adequate experimental data. This paper has experimentally clarified the relation between a typical fracture origin of a ceramic turbine wheel and the calculated stress value at that point. By applying this relation to the ceramic gasifier turbine wheel, fracture origin and fracture rotational speed are also confirmed to reasonably reflect its material properties.
