The thermodynamic performance of three CAES (Compressed Air Energy Storage) plant configurations, characterized by different charging ratios and fuel rates, are computed. Their cost effectiveness, as storage/peaking plants, is investigated with reference to the Italian grid conditions, and compared to other solutions, like hydroelectric pumped plants or peaking gas turbines. It is found that the adoption of a high temperature CAES system in aquifer, owing to its low capital costs and good efficiency, could yield very promising economic results for various fuel cost scenarios.
