The Electron Beam Vapor Deposition Process (EB-PVD) is used in production for overlay coating of heat engine parts. The process is highly automated, especially as quite a number of process parameters have to be kept in very close tolerances. With the example of a fully automated PVD coater with charges up to 11 parts it is demonstrated how the critical data during the process, e.g.: - preheating temperature of parts entering the coating chamber, e.g. 1000℃±10℃ - chemistry in the vapor along the extended evaporation pool - coating thickness for the whole charge of parts - thickness profile around the parts - structure, surface quality of coating etc. can be kept in specified small tolerance values in a continuous coating campaign of up to 80 hours. The machine technology involved as well as the cost base of this process is evaluated.
