This paper presents experimental results in terms of flow visualization, mean temperature and mean concentrations of major species throughout the flow field with the variation of swirl and equivalence ratio. Measurements were carried out in a geometrically simple laboratory combustor composed of coaxial free jets with swirl. The objective is to improve understanding of the role of swirl and the related flow phenomena in determining combustion characteristics such as combustion efficiency and air pollutant emissions. Especially, the influences of the recirculation zone on the flame stabilization have been investigated by using experimental methods. As a results, for the strong swirl flow field, the flame is formed annularly around the boundary of recirculation zone. This annular flame bend suppresses diffusing the core of fuel to the outside of recirculation zone. It plays an important role in holding the flame.
