Sintered Si_3N_4 is a promising material for use in high temperature structural component such as rotors in advanced gas turbine engines owing to its excellent high temperature strength. Sintered Si_3N_4 has high toughness because it has composite microstructure with elongated Si_3N_4 grain and grain boundary phase. The cyclic fatigue behavior in sintered Si_3N_4 exhibits both time dependent and cycle number dependent features. Alternating load accelerates the fatigue more severely than pulsating load. The fatigue limit appears to exist in the S-N curve. Effects of mean stress and amplitude stress on the fatigue behaviors in sintered Si_3N_4 can be fitted to the modified Goodman relation.
