Fabrication of SiC turbocharger rotors by injection molding is described. Properties of the material and component of sintered SiC are compared with those of Si_3N_4. A mixture of SiC, boron carbide, and carbon black powders, with water was prepared as the starting slurry. A SiC sintered body with a bending strength of 600MPa was obtained. A ceramic-powder/organic-binder system, which provided both injection molding feasibility and high strength after sintering, was developed by use of SiC powders consisting of 40% coarse and 60% fine particles. Optimization of the parameters in kneading, molding, binder removal, and sintering processes resulted in a yield rate of 83% for 150 rotors fabricated. The average burst speed of SiC rotor was 1.23×10^5rpm, nearly 30% lower than that of Si_3N_4 rotor with the same dimensions.
