Continuous process improvements have reduced the plant steam demand substantially, while the consumption of electricity remained almost unchanged. In order to cope with these changed cogeneration requirements Dow Chemical GmbH started a project which will allow increased power cogeneration even at reduced steam demand. The project includes the replacement of three TG 20 AA gasturbines against new IM 5000 aeroderivative turbines, the use of hydrogen as gasturbine fuel and the improvement of the heat-recovery boilers. The electrical efficiency of the combined cycle improved from 31% to 40% LHV. The stack exhaust temperatures have been lowered by improved heat-recovery down to 75℃ resulting in an overall thermal efficiency for the combined cycle of 86.6% LHV.
