An optimal operational planning problem is studied for combined cycle cogeneration plants which are constructed by gas turbine generators, steam bleeding turbine generators, waste heat boilers, auxiliary boilers, refrigerators, etc. For this type of plants, it is a very important task to determine the plant's operational policy optimally for varying energy demands such as electric power, space heating and cooling, hot water supply, etc. This problem is formulated as a mixed-integer linear programming problem by adopting zero-one integer and continuous variables indicating respectively the on/off and the partial loading status of operation for several kinds of constituent equipment. By adopting the branch and bound algorithm, the plant's operational policy is determined optimally so as to minimize the hourly operational cost. Through a numerical study, it is ascertained that the proposed optimization method enables energy saving compared with the conventional plant's operational method.
