Due to its lack of natural resources, Japan has been developing a variety of technologies such as improvement in the conversion efficiency from fuel energy to electric power, the utilization of various fuels, and the efficient utilization of waste heat for stable power supplies and energy conservation. In relation to these technologies, the development of an efficient gas turbine plays a key role. Among the various research and development items under the national projects sponsored by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), the following three major projects related to gas turbines are presented in this paper. (1) AGTJ-100 Advanced Gas Turbine (2) ACT 90 Advanced Cogeneration Technology in the 1990s (3) IGC Integrated Coal Gasification Combined Cycle Power Systems In these projects, the advanced gas turbine (AGTJ-100) has achieved an overall thermal efficiency of 52% in test operations, at a maximum output of 93MW and a turbine inlet temperature of 1300℃.
