The future for heavy-duty gas turbine technological development looks very promising. Although tremendous growth has already taken place, there is still the potential for dramatic improvements in gas turbine performance. Compared with the competitive prime movers-conventional steam power plants and reciprocating piston engines-the gas turbine is a youngster, and gas turbine technology is still following a strong growth curve. The coming decades will witness the continued growth of air-cooled turbines and the commercialization of the water-cooled turbine. The continuing development of combined cycle power plants will make the achievement of 50% thermal efficiency a reality. General Electric has sustained its leadership role in the development and production of heavy-duty gas turbines, and with continued emphasis on the advancement of gas turbine technology, this leadership position will be maintained.
