With the ever increasing costs of developing new military aero-engines, the paper opens with a discussion on the advantages and problems associated with major industrial groups from different countries collaborating to produce one product. This discussion is highlighted by reference to an active engine project currently being undertaken by the Governments and Industry of UK, FRG and Italy. The evolution of a common engine design to meet various requirements is described. Methods of work sharing, management and problem solving within an international consortium are detailed. The paper then examines some of the technologies involved in advanced military aeroengines. These include a review of the design and function of a sophisticated oil/air system together with a discussion of the demanding handling requirements of a high bypass ratio reheated turbofan and how these can be met with an electronic control system. Compressor, combustion and turbine technologies are examined with examples given on how improvements have been achieved. These include super critical aerofoils for compressor blading, single crystal turbine blades and powder metallurgy for turbine discs. The paper concludes with a look into the future at technology areas from which even further performance enhancement is anticipated.
