This paper describes two years of operating experience of Japan's first unfired heat recovery combined cycle plant of the Japanese National Railways' Kawasaki Power Station. Since the plant started commercial operation in April 1981 it has been performing excellent daily start/stop operation and achieving low heat rate burning distillate oil. During the two years preceding March 1983, this plant successfully recorded 8,939 operating hours, 606 starts, a gross thermal efficiency of 38.5% (HHV), a forced outage rate of 1.2% and a start reliability of 99%. This record is quite outstanding showing the excellent design, quality control in manufacturing and operation of the plant. The results of two periodic major overhaul inspections are also described.
